Winning photos go on display in Kaitaia! Far North Exposure photo competition

Posted 13 years, 11 months ago    2 comments

The poignant and relevant theme “Our Water Our Future” has given the Judges for the Far North Exposure environmental photo competition a tough task in choosing this year’s winners. The Judges were impressed with the high standard of the entries and delighted that so many photographers of all ages have taken the time to send in their pictures. Entries ranged from stunning land and seascape shots to disconcerting images that capture our impacts on our water.

Prize-giving for the competition is timed to follow World Wetlands Day, and will be held in Kaitaia on Thursday 3rd February at the Bank Street Art Gallery at 6pm. All are welcome to attend this event which has been made possible with the assistance of sponsors Top Print, More FM, Trees Company Nursery, the Department of Conservation and the Far North District Council.

The winning photographs from each of the three age categories are currently on exhibition at Bank Street Art Gallery in Kaitaia until Saturday 5th February.

Beach water quality: NRC results for week starting 24 January 2011

Posted 13 years, 11 months ago    1 comment

Each summer, Northland Regional Council test the water quality at a number of Northland’s popular coastal and freshwater swimming spots to make sure it’s safe for swimming.

Testing started on 29 November and will continue for 12 weeks through to March.

Beach water quality for week starting 17 January:

Many results this week are very high as a result of the recent heavy rain.  Between 60-200mm of rain fell across most of Northland during the storm on 22-23 January.

Warning signs have been placed by District Councils at the following sites (please see all the results below):

  • Kowharewa Bay
  • Ohawini Bay
  • One Tree Point
  • Pacific Bay
  • Matapouri 1st Bridge
  • Matapouri 2nd Bridge
  • McLeod Bay
  • Pataua South footbridge
  • Pataua South Frog Town
  • Pataua South East Beach
  • Urquharts Bay
  • Whananaki East Beach
  • Whananaki footbridge
  • Omamari Beach
  • Pahi at campground

NOTE: No additional signs placed by Far North District Council this week as most sites deemed unsafe for swimming after heavy rainfall

  • Status system

NRC give a three tier status system for swimming water quality.  This is based by assessing the risk of contamination at a beach swimming site using levels of the indicator bacteria Enterococci.  Find out more about what NRC test for

Green - safe to swimGreen: safe to swim
    Enterococci count less than 140/100ml

    Check before you swim

In general, water can be contaminated and unsafe for swimming if:

    • there is a warning sign erected indicating water is unsafe.
    • there has been heavy rain recently.
    • the water looks dirty (murky).
    • there are several potential sources of contamination nearby and upstream such as:
      • houses on septic tanks;
      • stock with access to the water; or
      • a sewage treatment plant discharge.

    Who to contact

NRC are responsible for routine surveillance monitoring. These results are sent to the District Councils and Northland Health, who then carry out follow-up sampling as required and warn the public of any swimming sites that may be unsafe.

For information about a specific area or a warning sign contact your local District Council or the on-duty Health Protection Officer at Northland Health.

Shark nations failing on conservation pledges

Posted 13 years, 11 months ago    3 comments

By Richard Black: Environment correspondent, BBC News

Many countries whose fishing fleets catch large numbers of sharks have failed to meet a 10-year-old pledge on conserving the species, a report says.

Governments are supposed to "encourage full utilisation of dead sharks" - but fins are targeted
Governments are supposed to "encourage full utilisation of dead sharks" - but fins are targeted

The wildlife trade monitoring network Traffic and the Pew Environment Group say most of the main shark fishing nations do not manage fisheries well.

Ten years ago, governments agreed a global plan to conserve sharks.

An estimated 100 million sharks are killed each year, with nearly a third of species at risk of extinction.

"Where shark populations are healthy, marine life beneath the waves thrives” states Jill Hepp of the Pew Environment Group.

Many fisheries target the fins for use in shark fin soup; and a number of countries, inclduing the US, have recently passed measures aimed at regulating the trade.

Neither of the two countries catching the most sharks - Indonesia and India - has yet finalised national plans of action for protecting sharks.

This was one of the main recommendations of the 2001 agreement under the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) that sharks needed international management.

Of the top 20 shark-catching nations, which collectively account for 80% of the global catch, only 13 have national plans in place.

"The fate of the world's sharks is in the hands of the top 20 shark catchers, most of which have failed to demonstrate what, if anything, they are doing to save these imperiled species," said Glenn Sant, leader of Traffic's global marine programme.

"They need to take action to stop the decline in shark populations, and help ensure that the list of species threatened by overfishing does not continue to grow."

The whale shark, the world's biggest fish, is shrinking because of overfishing
The whale shark, the world's biggest fish, is shrinking because of overfishing

Sharks are particularly vulnerable to overfishing because they live long lives and reproduce slowly.

As well as intentional fishing, many are caught accidentally in large nets and on the hooks of longline boats targeting species such as tuna and marlin.

Traffic and Pew are asking the FAO to review implementation of the 10-year-old agreement when it meets later this year.

The 10 recommendations to governments agreed back in 2001 include identifying and protecting key habitat, ensuring catches are sustainable, and minimising waste and discards.

Many sharks are top predators; and there is an abundance of biological evidence to show their removal can have major impacts on the rest of the ecosystem.

"Where shark populations are healthy, marine life beneath the waves thrives; but where they have been overfished we see that world fall out of balance," said Jill Hepp, Pew's global shark conservation manager.

"Shark-catching countries and entities must stand by their commitments and act now to conserve and protect these animals."

      • houses on septic tanks;

NRC: Freshwater quality results for week starting 17 January 2011

Posted 13 years, 11 months ago    1 comment

Each summer, Northland Regional Council test the water quality at a number of Northland’s popular coastal and freshwater swimming spots to make sure it’s safe for swimming.

Testing started on 29 November and will continue for 12 weeks through to March.

Freshwater quality for week starting 17 January:

Warning signs have been placed by District Councils at the following sites (please see all the results below):

    • Ocean Beach Stream
    • Otamure Bay Stream
    • Lake Waro
    • Whangarei Falls
    • Waipu Cove Stream
    • Langs Beach Stream
    • Coopers Beach Stream
    • Kapiro Stream at Purerua Rd
    • Kerikeri River at Stone Store
    • Waipoua River at DoC headquarters
    • Kaihu River at campground

    Status system

NRC give a three tier status system for swimming water quality.  This is based by assessing the risk of contamination at a freshwater swimming site using levels of the indicator bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli).  Find out more about what NRC test for

Green - safe to swim Green: safe to swim
     E. coli less than 260/100ml

    Orange: caution

Orange: caution, potentially unsuitable to swim
     E. coli count more than 260/100ml

Red: unsafe to swim Red: unsafe to swim
     E. coli count more than 550/100ml
