The Department of Conservation wants to hear from you!

You will go in the draw to win one of 3 $100 gift vouchers!

Plus all schools with students who enter will go in the draw to win a $100 book voucher!

Conditions of entry:

Competition will run from the 6th to the 19th September, 2010. All entrants must be resident in the Far North and aged between 7-17yrs. One entry per person. Winners will be published in the Northland Age on Thursday 23rd September, announced over Te Hiku radio, & posted on the blog. Winners will choose a gift voucher from one of our participating ‘Green Up Far North’ businesses (look on the blog-page or contact DOC for a list of participating businesses).

Notice Of Public Meeting

Mark Shanks and Peter Furze, on behalf of the wider community, cordially invite you to ask questions of your local body candidates and help launch

‘Korero Corner’

 at The Kaitaia Market

on Saturday September 4th.

The following questions have been sent to all the candidates for the Te Hiku Community Board, the Te Hiku Ward Representatives for FNDC, and for Mayor of the district.

Each candidate, in alphabetical order, will have 3 minutes for their address and then 2 minutes for questions from the floor, except the mayoral aspirants who will have 7 minutes for their address and then 3 minutes for questions from the floor. These time limits will be strictly adhered to so that we can keep to our timetable as written below.

Questions:

  • What are your reasons for standing for the position?
  • What does democracy mean to you?
  • How would you translate democracy into local government?
  • What do you see as the strengths of our district?
  • How would you make use of these strengths?

The Northland Age and Te Hiku Media will be covering this occasion for other communities within the FNDC boundaries, and beyond.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND CIVIL ENGINEERING

PRESENTATIONS FROM RAU HOSKINS AND KEPA MORGAN

AHIPARA WHAREUKU PROJECT PRESENTATION

On behalf of the Ahipara whareuku project in conjunction with the University of Auckland and Te Puni Kokiri, the Unaiki Mare Whanau Trust would like to invite you to a hui about alternative options for building papakianga on whenua tupuna for whanau and hapu.

A rare opportunity to hear presentations from Rau Hoskins, Director of Design Tribe Architects and Dr Kepa Morgan, Associate Dean of the Civil Engineering Department for the University of Auckland will be of definite value.

They will be discussing, amongst other issues:

  • Papakainga construction technologies - including Uku
  • Papakainga infrastructure technologies / alternative systems
  • Papakainga design principles - moving beyond the box
  • Papakainga funding mechanisms including Kainga Whenua scheme

 A full presentation about the Ahipara whareuku project will be given by Ahipara Project coordinators Heeni Hoterene and Rueben Taipari Porter. Rueben and Heeni are local kaitiaki whenua and strong advocates for sustainable maori independence. They will share korero on:

  •  Project experiences
  •  Project planning
  •  Financials and logistics
  •  Working with maori land shareholders
  •  Relationships with local councils
  •  Building papakainga under Tikanga maori
  •  Improvements on Logistics

There are only 40 positions available for this hui so notification of participation and registration per representative is required. Financial support of this hui is welcome.
